Welcome to the brand-new year! It's already January 18th, so hopefully you're settling into 2012 and enjoying it. There's finally some snow sticking around; we'll let you decide if that's a good thing or not!

We at WOMT would like to let you know that in the next several weeks, you can expect some exciting new changes to our social media presence! We will be updating the look of our blog, and will be utilizing the blog several times a week to provide you with goings on at the station and within the community, news from our clients, and even giveaways from time to time. With fall well underway, there is lots of news around the station and the community!

We would like to congratulate the Milwaukee Brewers for winning the NL Central Division and making the playoffs for the first time in nearly three decades! Follow the Brewers throughout the entire post-season on WOMT Radio.

Remember, WOMT's all-new sports show, Sports Talk, takes place live every Monday evening beginning a 6:25. Stop out to Wenzel's Perfect World on Calumet Avenue every Monday night to watch live and participate with our announcers and exciting guests. Sports Talk is excited to announce that they have partnered with NEW Coaches to put together your exclusive opportunity to travel in style for a true sports-lovers experience! Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra Community Chorus Announces Auditions

The Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra announces auditions for membership in its Community Chorus, directed by Jennifer Kasten. Auditions will take place in the Choir Room at First Presbyterian Church, 502 North Eighth Street, Manitowoc, on Tuesday, September 6. Interested singers can call (920) 860-6306 to schedule an audition time between 7:00 and 10:00 p.m. A prepared selection is not required. Instead, singers will be asked to sing simple vocal exercises and the patriotic song America the Beautiful to demonstrate their range and vocal quality.

Upcoming events for the Community Chorus include an appearance on the MSO’s October 29^th HALLOWEEN SPOOKTACULAR and the annual holiday performance of Handel’s Messiah on Sunday, December 11^th. Because of space limitations at the performance venue, the choir for Messiah is limited to the participation of only 40 to 50 singers. A larger group will be used for the SPOOKTACULAR and for other events later in the season that are still inn the planning stage. The chorus rehearses at the Capitol Civic Centre every other Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., starting September 13.

Volunteer Opportunities

Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Manitowoc County has two fantastic volunteer opportunities coming up ~ a great way for community involvement!

Their first volunteer opportunity will take place on August 6. This is Packer Family Night at Lambeau Field, and we will be running a concession stand at this event. They are looking for people who are able and willing to assist with the preparation and serving of food. It's a fun experience, and one that will make you appreciate inexpensive food! Volunteers will need to check in at Lambeau at 4 pm.

The second available volunteer opportunity will take place on August 9 at the annual Golf Fore Kids fundraiser. Volunteers are needed to assist golfers on the par 3 contest holes. All volunteers will receive meals during their shift, and full day or half day opportunities are both available.

Radio's Lasting Impact

Radio Ranks #2 on A&E's list of "101 Gadgets of all Time."

It's right behind the smartphone - a gadget that increasingly will also function as a radio. Arbitron supplied some research data to A&E and makes a very valid point - we take radio's ubiquitous nature completely for granted. We grew up with it, it's always been in our lives (unlike an iPod or BlackBerry), and when we use a little less of it, we somehow think it's dead or dying.

The A&E special, produced with Popular Mechanics, even ranks radio ahead of television and personal computers. The Arbitron data carries another message we forget about - the huge numbers of listeners a Rush Limbaugh can aggregate in a national audience, compared to the measured audiences of TV programs that get ten times more publicity. Emmis' Jeff Smulyan talks about how radio's lost a little of it's mojo - not its talent or creativity, necessarily. But its confidence and even swagger. The "101 Gadgets" program is a useful reminder of a medium we take for granted - and we really should know better.

Trevor Seehafer, Advertising at WOMT/WQTC in Manitowoc and WLKN in Cleveland has successfully met the requirements to earn the designation of Radio Marketing Professional (RMP) as certified by the Radio Advertising Bureau.

The Radio Marketing Professional (RMP) designation is the first step in a comprehensive, multi-level training and certification program developed and administered by the Radio Advertising Bureau. RMP graduates must complete a rigorous course of study that focuses on mastering the knowledge and skills necessary to help local businesses maximize their advertising success. To earn their RMP diploma, candidates must pass a challenging one-hour written examination.

The Radio Advertising Bureau (RAB) is the sales and marketing arm of the Radio industry with more than 5,000 member stations, networks, and related radio sales organizations in the US and abroad.

Sandi Davis is a native of Manitowoc, WI and has been in radio for 34 years. She graduated from Manitowoc Lutheran High School and wnt to Trans American School of Broadcasting in Wausau, WI. Her first radio broadcasting job was at WCUB in Manitowoc. She stayed there for 6 months and got a call from WQTC in Two Rivers where she worked for 5 years. She then moved onto other radio markets such as Cedar Rapids, IA - Grand Rapids, MI - Omaha, NE - Lansgin, MI - and St. Cloud, MN. She has been an Assistant Program Director and Music Director and has worked at many different radio formats: Hot AC, Top 40, Oldies, Adult Contemporary and Country. Sandi has done commercial voice-overs and announcing for TV and free-lance voice work. Sandi enjoys fishing, boat riding, hiking in the woods, going to movies, playing with her dog, Molly, and other actives.

Welcome to the month of April! As the weather begins to warm and we see some spring showers, we have lots of exciting news for this month.

On Monday, April, 4th, WQTC-102.3 FM will be broadcasting live at Menards for their grand re-opening! We encourage you to join in the fun ~ stop down

As you know, Tuesday, April 5th is election day. Please remember to vote for your choice for Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice, as well as incoming school board members. WOMT encourages you to learn about the candidates before exercising your right to vote. We will be covering this event beginning at the time the polls close. (Please note that we will be briefly disrupting the Brewer Broadcast to bring you the results of the election.)

We would also like to encourage you to join our announcers on Saturday, April 16th from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM as the Ant Hill Mob holds their Annual Motorcycle Show and Dance at the Manitowoc County Expo Grounds. There will be lots of great activities throughout the day at this fantastic yearly fundraiser.

The general election is Tuesday, April 5 and WOMT will have breaking news all night long. There are several issues of local importance on the ballot including City Council and school board races. Polls will close at 8:00 PM and we will break into the broadcast of Brewers baseball until the races are decided. Please don't forget to get out and vote on April 5.
