Volunteer Opportunities

Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Manitowoc County has two fantastic volunteer opportunities coming up ~ a great way for community involvement!

Their first volunteer opportunity will take place on August 6.  This is Packer Family Night at Lambeau Field, and we will be running a concession stand at this event.  They are looking for people who are able and willing to assist with the preparation and serving of food.  It's a fun experience, and one that will make you appreciate inexpensive food!  Volunteers will need to check in at Lambeau at 4 pm.

The second available volunteer opportunity will take place on August 9 at the annual Golf Fore Kids fundraiser.  Volunteers are needed to assist golfers on the par 3 contest holes.  All volunteers will receive meals during their shift, and full day or half day opportunities are both available.

More information and details regarding each of these events are available by calling 920-684-7445 or emailing Dan at dan@bbbsmantycounty.org.

Upcoming Promotion: Facebook Frenzy

The Facebook Frenzy will be a one day only event that takes place completely on Facebook!  Join us on Facebook August 1 from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm for your chance to take part ~ the only requirement for participation is that you be a Facebook fan of WOMT Radio.  To become a fan, simply head to the WOMT Radio Facebook fan page and hit the "like" button; it's so easy!  Beginning at 7:00 in the morning, every hour will provide fans with a new opportunity to win huge prizes - valued around $100.00 each, and some even more - from our participating sponsors ~ that's at least 12 chances to win, and some hours will have more than one winner!  Each hour, we will post a phrase that relates to the sponsor of the hour; fans simply have one hour to "like" that post, and when the hour is up all the names from that hour will be entered for random selection of the winner.  Winners will then be announced on our Facebook page sometime during the following hour.  This is such a fun and easy contest, there's no reason not to participate!

Radio's Lasting Impact

Radio Ranks #2 on A&E's list of "101 Gadgets of all Time."

It's right behind the smartphone - a gadget that increasingly will also function as a radio.  Arbitron supplied some research data to A&E and makes a very valid point - we take radio's ubiquitous nature completely for granted.  We grew up with it, it's always been in our lives (unlike an iPod or BlackBerry), and when we use a little less of it, we somehow think it's dead or dying.

The A&E special, produced with Popular Mechanics, even ranks radio ahead of television and personal computers.  The Arbitron data carries another message we forget about - the huge numbers of listeners a Rush Limbaugh can aggregate in a national audience, compared to the measured audiences of TV programs that get ten times more publicity.  Emmis' Jeff Smulyan talks about how radio's lost a little of it's mojo - not its talent or creativity, necessarily.  But its confidence and even swagger.  The "101 Gadgets" program is a useful reminder of a medium we take for granted - and we really should know better.
